How to Measure for Riding Boots

Why accurate riding-boot measurements matter
A tall riding boot must fit more than your foot. The shaft needs to sit comfortably around your calf, the boot height should suit your leg and the foot should feel secure without being cramped. A more accurate measurement reduces sizing uncertainty and helps you choose a pair that is comfortable for riding, schooling, competition and life around the yard.
What you will need
- A flexible fabric measuring tape
- The riding socks you normally wear
- Your breeches or jodhpurs
- A flat, hard floor and a wall
- A pen or phone to record your measurements
- Someone to help, if possible
Before you measure
- Measure at the end of the day, when feet may be slightly larger.
- Wear the socks and riding clothing you expect to wear with the boots.
- Stand naturally and keep your weight evenly distributed.
- Measure both legs and both feet. It is normal for one side to be slightly different.
- Record the larger relevant measurement and keep your notes for your order.
Your three key riding-boot measurements
1. Foot length and shoe size
Stand on a flat surface with your heel lightly against a wall. Measure from the wall to the end of your longest toe. Do not measure while sitting, and do not press your toes against the wall. Compare the measurement in centimetres with our South African, UK, EU and US shoe-size chart, then check the product page for its recommended size.
2. Calf circumference
Stand upright with your weight on both feet. Wrap the tape around the widest part of your calf, usually around the upper third of the lower leg. Keep the tape comfortably snug without pulling it tight, and do not flex your calf while measuring. Record the measurement for each leg.
3. Leg height
With your riding socks and breeches on, measure from the floor beside your heel up to the point where you want the top of the boot to sit. Keep your leg straight and measure both legs. Your preferred boot height can depend on your leg shape, discipline and the style of boot.
